Senior Software Engineer - Quality & Automation

We believe in bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and the drive to transform knowledge into impact. Here, your curiosity fuels progress, your voice shapes innovation, and your ambition helps redefine what’s possible within science and learning. We are a culture that obsesses over impact, challenges, and drives what’s next to power infinite possibilities for our customers, colleagues and society at large.

About the Role:

Build the Future of Learning:

Are you passionate about building reliable, scalable software and using automation to transform how engineering teams develop and deliver high-quality products? Do you enjoy solving complex technical problems, building frameworks and developer tooling, and creating systems that catch problems before they ever reach customers?

Join our Assessments Technology team and help shape the next generation of learning and assessment platforms used by learners around the world. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer specializing in quality, automation, and engineering enablement. You’ll work alongside software engineers, architects, product managers, and technical leaders to build reliable software, develop scalable automation capabilities, strengthen engineering practices, and make quality an integral part of software architecture and development.

This is not a traditional QA role. You’ll be an engineer embedded within the development organisation, writing production-quality code and automation, designing frameworks and tooling, influencing architecture and testability, and helping teams build systems that are easier to validate, operate, scale, and evolve.

What You’ll Do:

• Design and build software, frameworks, tools, and automation that improve product quality and engineering efficiency.

• Develop scalable automated testing capabilities across APIs, services, integrations, user interfaces, distributed systems, and end-to-end workflows.

• Build and evolve automation frameworks and shared engineering capabilities that can be reused across teams and applications.

• Partner with software engineers during architecture, design, and development to improve system testability, reliability, resiliency, and maintainability.

• Define technical approaches for test infrastructure, automated environments, test data, mocks, service virtualization, and dependency management.

• Integrate automation deeply into CI/CD pipelines to provide fast, reliable, and actionable feedback throughout the software development lifecycle.

• Determine the most effective testing strategy across unit, component, contract, integration, API, and end-to-end layers while avoiding unnecessary or redundant automation.

• Identify gaps in coverage, reliability, tooling, and engineering processes and build sustainable solutions to address them.

• Investigate complex defects, automation failures, and production issues; perform root-cause analysis; and develop solutions that prevent recurrence.

• Improve the performance, reliability, observability, scalability, and maintainability of automation and test infrastructure.

• Contribute directly to application and service code when needed to improve testability, instrumentation, reliability, or system behavior.

• Collaborate with architects and engineers on technical designs to ensure quality, resiliency, observability, and operability are considered early in the engineering lifecycle.

• Lead technical discussions and influence engineering standards related to automation, software quality, reliability, testing strategy, and continuous delivery.

• Explore and apply AI-assisted engineering approaches to areas such as test generation, intelligent automation, failure analysis, coverage analysis, defect detection, and engineering productivity.

• Evaluate emerging AI-enabled development and automation tools, frameworks, and patterns and determine where they can meaningfully improve speed, reliability, and maintainability.

• Mentor engineers and help raise automation, software quality, and engineering capabilities across the organization.

• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and contribute to a highly collaborative engineering culture.

What We’re Looking For:

• Strong software engineering experience with significant hands-on experience designing and building automated testing solutions.

• Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, Python, or similar.

• Experience designing, developing, and maintaining automation frameworks using technologies such as Playwright, Cypress,

• Selenium, or comparable tools.

• Strong experience testing APIs, backend services, integrations, data flows, and distributed systems.

• Experience with modern software architecture and the ability to understand complex interactions across applications, services, infrastructure, and data layers.

• Strong understanding of unit, component, contract, integration, API, and end-to-end testing strategies.

• Ability to make sound engineering decisions about what should be tested, where it should be tested, and which level of automation provides the most value.

• Experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery workflows.

• Experience debugging complex systems and performing root-cause analysis across application, service, data, infrastructure, and automation layers.

• Strong understanding of software design principles, maintainability, testability, observability, and engineering best practices.

• Experience with Git, GitHub, pull-request workflows, and modern software development practices.

• Experience contributing to engineering architecture, technical design, or platform-level decisions.

• Experience using AI-assisted development tools, AI frameworks, agents, or AI-enabled automation, or a strong interest in experimenting with emerging AI-driven engineering approaches.

• Curiosity about how AI can improve software development, automation, test generation, failure analysis, defect detection, and engineering productivity.

• Familiarity with technologies such as AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, MongoDB, MySQL, observability platforms, and DevOps practices is a plus.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, product teams, and technical leadership.

• Experience mentoring engineers and improving technical practices across a team.

• Strong written and verbal English communication skills, as you’ll collaborate with an international engineering organization.

Why Join Us?

• Build technology that has a meaningful impact on learners around the world.

• Solve challenging engineering problems involving automation, distributed systems, reliability, scalability, and software quality.

• Help define modern quality engineering practices where quality is an engineering responsibility—not a separate phase of development.

• Build frameworks, tools, and infrastructure that make entire engineering teams faster and more effective.

• Explore how AI and emerging automation technologies can transform the way software is developed, tested, analyzed, and delivered.

• Work with modern cloud platforms, CI/CD systems, automation technologies, distributed architectures, and AI-enabled engineering practices.

• Influence technical direction, architecture, engineering standards, and development practices.

• Collaborate with talented engineers, architects, product leaders, and technology teams across the globe.

• Be part of a culture that values engineering excellence, ownership, experimentation, continuous learning, and meaningful customer impact.

If you’re a software engineer who enjoys building the systems behind great software—the automation, tooling, infrastructure, and engineering

practices that make products easier to test, safer to change, and more reliable in production—and you’re excited about how AI can push those capabilities even further, we’d love to hear from you.
